The Human Right To Not Be Offended!

One of the more sane voices in the legal community speaks out on the ongoing human rights case currently before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. Edward Greenspan, admittedly one of the top legal minds in this country offers his view here. The complaint is against Maclean's magazine by the Canadian Islamic Congress and he calls their efforts to hijack freedom of the press "an administrative fatwa". I will watch the outcome with interest. Could this also affect bloggers who have opinions and from time to time may offend someone?

Interesting point of view and one that matches my own. Thanks for putting this out there as a reminder to all that our civil liberties must be protected at all costs.

As a person, who offends people from time to time (not intentionally), it is interesting.

You just cannot win (not that one is really trying to). You are not allowed an opinion, even in casual conversation at times. Opinion is akin to fingers, most people have them. I agree though, that if you have a public opinion, it is fair game and should be up for debate.

I have taken my name off my blog, in case I offend the Radical Feminists again.

Personally, I think we all have the right to write what we want, but in this there are reprocussions. Instead of "think before you speak", it is "think before you blog". . .you must go down the list of potential people that you may offend and tweek your writing. That is why of late, I have become bland.

I am not talking about blatant racism, and I really did not think that article was racist, IMHO.

Some people take offense at anything. Some people just wait to find something to be offended with, if it doesn't mirror their own beliefs, or ends.

I also think a lot before posting something and am also becoming bland. Doesn't seem to be the case though for those bloggers who spew hate against the west or against the christian or jewish religions I've noticed. We are out there, name or not, we can be found. There is a blogger in Egypt in jail for writing his opinion. Is this our future...ciao
