Motorcycle Helmets - A Human Rights Issue?

It was only a matter of time until the laws of the land had to be changed to accommodate (I love that word) citizens of different cultures so here is todays gem.

The law in the Province of Ontario states that anyone riding a motorbike must wear a helmet but Mr. Baljinder Singh Badesha doesn't think that this law should apply to him. Why not you ask? Well it infringes on his religious freedom. The Ontario Human Rights Commission is going to back him on this one. Think he'll win?

In his own words he says "I want to be treated like an ordinary citizen of Ontario". Wear the damn helmet or don't ride the bike. I was always under the impression that a licence to drive either a car or a motorcycle is a privilege and if you don't or can't obey the law, too bad you loose...don't they take the right to drive away from drunks and elderly people? Will this become a human rights issue too someday?

I just dont understand people. Laws are there for a reason. he has a right to follow the law or get fined for not doing what IS law. his rights? well.... nevermind. not going to go there, just hate when people think they are above the law and use the "rights of whatever" issue.

hugs girlie :)

Well I am certainly an advocate of wearing helmets and of following the law, but if he doesn't wnat to wear one then he will change his mind when he wrecks and gets his head knocked off his shoulders.

It looks like he will get an exception based on religion. Many people who called in to the tv news the other day commented that if they had a collision with this man and he died that this would stay with them always. That's my fear also. Plus with public health care (free) we all get to pay for his care and if he becomes disabled for life we all pay...ciao

Why can't the man ride with a turban and a helmet?

If he uses material used in turbans and glues it to the outside of his helmet, he has the protection of the helmet AND has the religious adornments. Then, when the helmet is off, he can quickly whip out his regular one from his back pack or from a pocket in his chaps.

Sounds a bit like my Attach-O-Beard.
