U.S. Mayors Call For Boycott Of Alberta Oil?

In the news today, Mayors of major American cities are calling for a boycott of Alberta oil. Are they nuts, do they really think it is better to get it from the middle east? Heck, they don't have to invade us to get it, we sell it willingly under NAFTA. According to this article, it would be difficult to enforce so is it a publicity stunt? To what end?

One would think that getting their oil from a "friendly" nation would be a good thing...then again, maybe it's an election strategy.

To answer your three questions:
Yes, they're nuts.
It is election year and they'll say anything
Politics make strange bedfellows.

But, according to them:
"The production of tarsands oil from Canada emits approximately three times the carbon dioxide pollution per barrel as does conventional oil production and significantly damages Canada's Boreal forest ecosystem -- the world's largest carbon storehouse."

Rudee, bringing oil on tankers across oceans has it's own hazards never mind that it comes from countries where human rights, especially womens rights are suspect. Most of the oil companies in Alberta are American owned and we supply one third of America's energy supply. That's a lot of oil...ciao
