Gold In Hockey!!
My apologies to my American friends, but the Canadian Men won, full stop.
We had plans to go out for dinner and our reservation was for 6:30 thinking we had lots of time, the game would be over. It was not meant to be of course, they went into overtime and there we were standing with our coats on, door open, non hockey friends waiting outside for us and we weren't budging until we either won or lost.
The phone rang and it was my stepson from California. He was gloating a little that the U.S. team had tied it up in the dying seconds of the third period. So said I, "who do you think will win it?" His response was that he didn't want to jinx anything so he wouldn't say. At that very moment, Canada scored and I said "Nick, we just won it". There was dead silence on the other end of the line, it was comical. He didn't believe me. Seems his station had a couple of seconds delay. To say he was stunned and disappointed is an understatement and since I didn't know what to do with his silence and didn't want to gloat I handed to phone over to Steve. Even though Steve is an American/Canadian dual citizen he was cheering for Canada and I heard him gloat. That Sydney Crosby is some terrific hockey player.
I have to say that I never liked the phrase "Own The Podium" very much but I am very proud of what our athletes did in the last couple of weeks and we have won the most Gold medals by any country in winter Olympics ever...
When we finally did get downtown for dinner, the streets were alive in a sea of red flags. Cars were honking their horns and whistling and even the police got in the act by letting off their sirens just for fun.
So to all the journalists (if you can call them that) from good old England and the New York Times, who trashed the games, the city, the weather etc., stuff it were the sun don't shine...

It was a great game, but I miss the days before the pros started playing. Those were some great games, too.

Your nation put on a great show that was a pleasure to watch these past 2 weeks.
The New York Times and the British press are all singing a different tune today. I think what surprised a lot of people is how amazingly nationalistic we have become these last two weeks. Flag waving to that degree has never been a Canadian thing, we've always left that to the Americans. It is this spirit that I hope will last.
canada did a marvelous job of hosting the olympics and i am very glad they won that game! they sure deserved it...

Yes it was won fair and square. What amazed me so much during the last two weeks is this; Canada has never been known for nationalism and flag flying but it seemed that as soon as the foreign media started calling this "the worst games ever" (that was the nicest comment), this country just pulled together to a degree I haven't seen since Expo 67 in Montreal. It was awesome to behold...
Yes, I know it was - I meant even if we lose, it's fun to play the game. That's what I meant by my last comment.
I know what you mean, Rositta. It's great when you see everyone coming together with pride and strength. It's a good thing to be united. A people joined together can be a great thing.
Our Prime Minister Harper, won a case of beer from President Obama on a bet, he he....
Ha! See, that's why we're allies. We enjoy a little competition, but we give a treat to the winner. ;)
It was an excellent games ....so much so that I had to go put my earplugs in and read my book as I couldn't stand the thought of us losing...I would have been so said...so when I heard my husband stomping his feet I knew we had won!! Well i don't remember Expo 67 but I certainly remember Expo 86 in Vancouver. That was a great event as well. We had our first rapid transit line built for that event and haven't turned back since...yes our dear little Vancouver is all grown up now.

That was a fantastic game, unfortunately, I had to quell my enthusiasm and my tongue as I had to watch it at the inlaws. My bum was clenched harder than when I drive in a snowstorm. . . .Yay Canada!!!
Kudo's to all the atheletes though, just getting to the Olympics is a major accomplishment, and sometimes in the midst of all the excitement and fervour we miss that. Even coming in 19th in the world is amazing.
Kind of relieved the games are over. . .
Boy, would I love to do bob sled.

Rositta, one of my loves is sledding, it also gave me my second, second degree concussion this year. . . but, oh boy, I love that feeling of speed. Makes you feel like you are young again. Next time I go, I will attach my camera to my hat and you can pretend you are on there with me. The only problem, crawling back up the hill. LOL
